A 29-year-old German tourist has been charged after an alleged one-punch attack which has left a young man in a critical condition in a Gold Coast hospital.

A good Samaritan had to be revived at the scene by police after he was allegedly punched from behind while trying to break up a fight between two groups of males in Surfers Paradise early on Friday morning.

The 23-year-old's injuries are now considered non life threatening, and he is in a critical but stable condition after hitting his head on the pavement.

"It's very serious," Detective Acting Senior Sergent Mark Mooney said.

"It just goes to show the damage that one punch can do."

Meanwhile the German man, who is in Australia on tourist visa, has been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

Police have contacted the German consulate and will make contact with the immigration department.

It's believed the victim knew at least one of the men in the fight on Orchid Avenue.

The tourist is expected to front Southport Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon.
