A man has been charged over an alleged road-rage incident on a Sydney motorway in which several bystanders were punched and an object thrown at a police car.

The fracas unfolded after a bungle between two cars driving along M4 motorway at Eastern Creek on Saturday morning.

One of the drivers, a 52-year-old man, allegedly threatened bystanders, including the driver of a truck that had pulled over to help.

The man allegedly punched one person and hit two others with a stick and threw an object at a police car when it arrived at the scene.

The man spent the night behind bars and is set to face Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday on several assault charges.
