A man has been charged with sparking a wild police chase which allegedly ended in him being Tasered after trying to give cops the slip in the NSW Illawarra region.

The 32-year-old, who is allegedly disqualified from driving until the year 2038, is accused of reversing an Alpha Romeo at high speed out of a Port Kembla driveway late on Wednesday night before mounting a kerb and bolting.

He was found hiding in the backyard of a Cringila home and allegedly zapped with a stun gun after refusing to comply with police.

A replica handgun was seized during a subsequent search of the man's vehicle, police will allege.

He has been refused bail on a string of firearm, theft and driving charges to face Wollongong Local Court on Thursday.
