Man charged over fatal Vic hit and run

A 23-year-old Melbourne man has been charged following a fatal hit and run in Victoria.

A woman, 45, died when she was struck by a car on the the Princes Highway in Corio on Monday night.

A Truganina man on Tuesday morning was charged with failing to stop at the scene of a collision and failing to render assistance.

He was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Detectives say the Corio woman was at a roadside diner with a shirtless man prior to being struck and killed.

They want to speak to anyone who saw the couple before the crash or who saw the collision itself.

The shirtless man is also being urged to contact police.

The 45-year-old's death brings the state's road toll to 242 which is 26 more than at the same time in 2015.

It was the third death on Victoria's roads during the Melbourne Cup long weekend.
