A man is behind bars after being charged over a daylight stabbing at a south Sydney bus stop.

A 39-year-old man was sitting with a friend at the Kogarah stop on Sunday afternoon when a man known to him approached armed with a knife.

A 30-year-old attacker stabbed the man in the abdomen before fleeing, police will allege.

The injured man was taken to St George Hospital in a stable condition, while his alleged attacker handed himself into police on Monday.

He has been refused bail to appear at Sutherland Local Court on Tuesday accused of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
