A man is due to face court after allegedly hitting his brother with a car during an argument at his engagement party on the Gold Coast.

It's alleged the 39-year-old man was trying to leave after an argument at Tallai on Saturday night and his 32-year-old brother, who was celebrating his engagement, tried to stop him leaving by getting in front of the vehicle.

Police say the driver then accelerated, knocking the groom to be into the air and causing serious internal injuries, before driving off.

The victim, from Upper Coomera, was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital with serious internal injuries as well as leg and arm fractures.

His brother has been charged with one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm and is due to face Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.
