Man critical after saved from Sydney blaze

A man is fighting for life after firefighters managed to pull him from a blaze at unit in Sydney's west.

Two police officers saw smoke coming from the unit in Penrith at around 8.30am on Saturday and attempted to break into the home but were beaten back by flames, according to NSW police.

Fire crews managed to locate an unconscious 58-year-old man and pull him from the blaze.

The man suffered extensive burns and was in cardiac arrest when he was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

Emergency services saved one dog and but another was found dead at the property.

The two police officers are being treated for smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
