A driver has died in an early morning road crash on the NSW mid-north coast.

Police say it appeared the 26-year-old man, from Taree, lost control of his ute and veered off the road before crashing into a tree at Marlee.

The collision occurred about 3am on Tuesday and was heard by a local resident who went to investigate and discovered the wreckage.

Emergency workers were called to the scene and found the man's body.

The incident takes the state's holiday road toll to three.

A 67-year-old female driver was killed on Christmas Day in a collision in northern NSW, while another female motorist died on Christmas Eve after rolling her sedan in the Upper Hunter region.

The AAP national road toll period runs from 0001 December 23, 2016 until 2359 January 3, 2017, local times.
