A man has died in a fiery highway crash on the NSW south coast in one of two fatal smashes in NSW on Sunday.

Police say the man was killed when the ute he was driving collided with a four-wheel drive and caught fire on the Princes Highway near Nowra about 12.30pm.

A man and a woman who were in the 4WD were taken to hospital, with the man, 63, in a serious condition.

The highway was closed in both directions for about six hours.

Meanwhile, a man in his 70s died at Silverdale in Sydney's west when the car he was a passenger in hit a ute at about 5.30pm.

Police said the 23-year-old male ute driver was performing a U-turn when the other vehicle, being driven by a woman in her 70s, collided with it.

Both drivers were uninjured.
