A man has died in a grass fire in the Northern Territory overnight.

The blaze ignited behind a petrol station on the Victoria Highway in Katherine about 8pm on Wednesday.

Police say when emergency services arrived they heard screaming for help within the flames.

A man was rescued from the fire but suffered severe burns and died in hospital a short time later.

Territory Duty Superintendent Brendan Muldoon says police haven't determined whether the incident was suspicious.

"We've got major crime and fire investigators heading out there this morning to establish the circumstances of how this has occurred," he told ABC radio.
