A Melbourne man has driven his car through a hospital emergency department entrance.

Police said the 34-year-old from Caroline Springs presented at the emergency department of Sunshine Hospital in Melbourne's west on Friday night, requested treatment and then left, only to return and drive his car through the doors.

"He's left prior to being treated, he's returned a short time later and driven his vehicle through the emergency entrance," Senior Sergeant Jason Dolman told Nine Network.

Nobody was injured in the crash but the driver was admitted to hospital for further assessment.

An engineer will now assess the building.

A hospital spokeswoman said the emergency department closed for a few hours on Friday night but has reopened and is operating as normal.
