A Tasmanian man has been charged with murder after his neighbour was shot in the head.

Police were called to a rural property at Lottah, in the state's northeast, at 7pm on Saturday.

They arrived to find a 47-year-old man dead with a single shotgun bullet wound to the head.

A 65-year-old man was waiting and arrested at the scene.

Acting Inspector Bob Baker said that man was the victim's neighbour and was the one who alerted authorities.

"We're still investigating but we believe there was a disagreement between both parties that escalated and led to this situation," Act Insp Baker told reporters.

The 65-year-old man was remanded in custody after an out-of-sessions hearing on Sunday morning and will re-appear in a Tasmanian court on Monday.
