A man is dead and another man has been arrested following a bloody incident at a Melbourne boarding house.

The body of a man aged in his 40s was found with suspected stab wounds at a Springvale house after midnight on Wednesday.

It's believed he had wounds to his neck and chest.

Ambulance Victoria says the man was already dead when they arrived at the scene but they did treat another man - aged in his 50s - who was suffering from breathing difficulties.

That man was not taken to hospital.

Detectives arrested a 53-year-old Springvale man at the scene and four other people are helping with their inquiries.

Police say all parties are known to each other.

A resident at the Peter Street house, Jason Sharkey, says he found his housemate in a pool of blood.

Mr Sharkey, who heard two people screaming and shouting, believes the victim was stabbed with "an icepick or screwdriver".

"As soon as I saw him on the ground I tried to revive him and called police and ambulance but unfortunately there was nothing I could do - he died so quickly," he told News Corp Australia.

"There was wounds to his neck, collarbone, chest and stomach but the wounds weren't like a knife attack. It was a lot smaller."

Forensic investigators and homicide detectives have spent the day at the property.

Neighbours have told reporters at the scene that police often went to the boarding house.

"There have been a variety of people flying through the house and the police have come here a few times because of incidents (but) this is probably the first major one," neighbour Temura Amia told the Seven Network.
