A man has been charged after allegedly driving under the influence of drugs, narrowly missing cyclists and other motorists before bumping a police car in Brisbane.

The 26-year-old man was driving slowly in Sandgate around 9am on Sunday and police were able to follow the car on foot and talk to the man for about half a kilometre.

The driver than began swerving across the road and narrowly missed hitting other motorists before driving in front of a police car and scraping the bull bar, police say.

The man allegedly fled from the moving vehicle and ran into nearby water as the car continued to roll forward and hit a parked van.

The road was closed to traffic while police negotiated with the man to come out of water.

He was eventually charged and taken to Redcliffe Hospital and will appear in court at a later date.
