A man who terrorised two teenage girls by fondling the legs of one and putting his hand up the skirt of another as they travelled to school on a crowded Melbourne tram has been jailed.

Marshall Jordan, 31, fought the single charge of performing an indecent act on a child under 16, but was found guilty.

He has been ordered to serve six months in prison and his name will be added to the sex offenders register for eight years.

Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt told Jordan he needed to protect the community from him.

"This conduct may have had the effect of increasing the level of fear in the community," he said.

In May last year Jordan was on a city-bound tram in Northcote when he fondled the legs of one girl in school uniform - an uncharged act - before putting his hand up the skirt of another girl, also in uniform, and touched her genital area.

The girl cried out, "How dare you, you bloody bastard," to which Jordan calmly replied he didn't do anything.

He then fled, changed his appearance and went to work.

The victim said in a statement read to the Melbourne Magistrates' Court the act had stripped all of her innocence.

"In places where I was once safe and secure I suddenly don't trust men," she said.

Supermarkets and trams are now places that make her feel unsafe, she said.

"It makes me so angry that I lost these to a selfish person."

Mr Klestadt said the victim of the indecent act is a strong, intelligent young woman and he hoped she continued counselling to overcome the burden Jordan's lewd conduct placed on her.
