A 35-year-old man is assisting police after his father-in-law was found dead at a unit block in north Queensland.

The 55-year-old man's body was discovered early on Tuesday, following reports of a disturbance on Milton Street, Mackay.

Detective Inspector Nikki Colfs confirmed the pair were known to each other.

"They were related, it was a father and son-in-law relationship, and at this stage you can imagine the family are grieving, they're mourning the loss of the 55-year-old male," she told reporters in Mackay.

"At this stage we are treating the death as suspicious. We are making inquiries with the people who reside at the residence and also in relation to some relatives."

Police declared two crime scenes, both of which have now been handed back to the residents at those addresses.

Investigations are continuing.
