Man released after baby death crash in Vic

A driver has been released without charge over a crash that killed a baby girl on Victoria's Philip Island.

The one-year-old girl was flown to hospital after the Mazda she was in collided with a Mercedes on Saturday night. She died shortly after arrival.

The 24-year-old man driving the Mercedes was taken to hospital under police guard for minor injuries.

Police have since interviewed the Nanagoon man and he was released pending further inquiries, a police spokeswoman on Sunday.

Two adults and another child who were also in the Mazda suffered minor injuries.

Four passengers in the Mercedes were not injured.

Victoria's road toll now stands at 281, 38 more deaths than the same time last year.
