A man believed to be a prisoner on the run has been spotted about 20 kilometres from a correctional centre in northeast NSW.

The man, fitting the description of Steven Barber, 39, was sighted on Monday around the area of the New England Highway, just over a week after he escaped from a minimum security facility in Glen Innes.

The man was riding a khaki-green Polaris quad bike and was last seen wearing a green or brown coloured camouflage jacket and long dark pants, police say.

They began another coordinated search, with the dog unit, on Tuesday after reports of the sighting.

Correctional officers realised Barber was missing on September 19 after his prison window was found smashed.

He's described as Caucasian in appearance with short brown hair, tattoos of boxing gloves on his back and a tattoo of a snake on his left forearm.
