A Melbourne man charged with the murder of a French tourist in the Northern Territory last week is due to face court in Alice Springs.

Pande Veleski, who has schizophrenia, was originally listed to come before the local court on Monday but was returned to hospital amid reports he had tried to self-harm while in custody.

His first appearance was then rescheduled to Wednesday on charges of murder, two counts of assaulting police and one of escaping lawful custody.

The charges follow the death of 33-year-old Philippe Jegouzo who was knifed in the neck in "an unprovoked attack" in front of his wife at a remote roadside rest stop north of Alice Springs.
