A man who fled to Queensland after being charged with rape in Tasmania will be extradited back to the island state.

The 26-year-old man fronted a Cairns court on Thursday after being arrested by Queensland police the day before, police say on Friday.

He will be flown to Tasmania under the guard of two detectives on Friday night.

Police say the rape charge relates to a "serious family violence incident" that is alleged to have happened on July 19.

The man is also facing unrelated charges including failing to appear at a Hobart Court.

He is due to appear before a Tasmanian justice of the peace on Saturday morning.
