A man's body has been been pulled from the Richmond River in northern NSW, with the local mayor saying it's a "tragedy" for the close-knit town.

The 22-year-old reportedly jumped from a Coraki bridge into the river on Sunday morning and failed to resurface, police say.

Search crews spent the day looking for the man and on Monday just after 9am his body was found about 50 metres downstream from the bridge.

Richmond Valley mayor Robert Mustow expressed his condolences to family and friends of the 22-year-old local man saying "everyone is pretty close knit", he told The Northern Star.
