Actress and cabaret performer Maria Venuti is gradually improving after suffering a stroke last month, her daughter Bianca Venuti says.

Venuti, 75, suffered the stroke in early November at her Sydney home, after a stranger was found on her property and arrested.

She was brought to Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital where she remains.

"Today, after five weeks in ICU, mum was able to move to a neurology ward. This follows some gradual improvement and the ability to remove most of the cords which were keeping her in the acute critical phase," Bianca Venuti said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Along with mum's close friends, I truly appreciate the overwhelming and beautiful outpouring of love and support that has been shown. We are grateful to everyone for their kindness, especially to the doctors and nurses at ICU RNSH for looking after her so well."

"Her recovery potential remains uncertain and we continue to hold hope and say prayers that she puts on the performance of her life. There is a long journey ahead."

Venuti last appeared on screen two years ago in the comedy Fat Pizza vs. Housos directed by Paul Fenech.
