Australian-based heavyweight Mark Hunt is suing the UFC for $US2.5 million ($A3.5 million) after one of his opponents tested positive to a banned substance.

New Zealand-born Hunt said he had launched the lawsuit on Wednesday for the earnings that his opponent Brock Lesnar won in a fight last July.

"Yes I am suing Lesnar and the UFC for his entire purse. Cheaters deserve nothing," Hunt told MarkHunt.tv.

It emerged after the fight that Lesnar had failed drug tests around the UFC 200 event on July 9 in Las Vegas and at the time Hunt expected compensation, he said.

The 42-year-old also wants a clause added to his contract that would mean any opponent caught cheating would forfeit the purse.

"It's only fair that if a guy gets caught cheating, he doesn't get paid," he said.

"I'm putting my life on the line when I get inside the cage. All I'm asking for is a level playing field."

Hunt is next due to fight Alistair Overeem at UFC 209 on March 4.
