Martha Wainwright to tour Australia

Martha Wainwright is really grateful to Australia, which might explain why she's just announced an extensive tour of the country.

And the Canadian singer-songwriter reveals why in her song Before the Children Came Along on her new album Goodnight City - her first solo record since 2012.

"We made love in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth," Wainwright sings.

"I wrote that not long after a trip to Australia and it's a love song and the reason the beginning of the song references that is because me and my husband were trying to conceive a child when in Australia and it worked, luckily for us," Wainwright told AAP.

"That was sort of the context in which I wrote the song and I'm very grateful to Australia. I'm grateful to the hotels in Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and everywhere else where we did it."

The singer is a mother to two sons Arcangelo and Francis and this is just one of the topics that gets explored on her new album. It's a record that traverses Wainwright's diverse musical influences from jazz to folk and pushes her voice to difficult levels.

"I think in many ways I let myself sound and perform and play in different ways than I have before," she said.

Wainwright also invited other songwriters to write for her including brother, singer Rufus Wainwright, Glen Hansard, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Beth Orton and writer Michael Ondaatje (The English Patient).

Francis, the song Rufus wrote, is recognisably his but written from her point of view, according to Martha.

"In typical older brother fashion he told me exactly how he wanted it sung. It's very hard to sing because it's quite high and you've to hold the note a really long, it's like an exercise in being Rufus," she said.

"For me it sounds like a Rufus Wainwright song and he played the piano on it ... it's like Rufus and I fusing into one and probably a dream come true for some of our fans."

Those fans are the same ones who hope the brother and sister will record an album together. That's something she can definitely see happening.

"That's going to be an interesting record," she said.

"I know it's going to happen and it might as well happen sooner rather than later while we still look pretty good".
