Mass starfish deaths a life cycle event

Mass starfish deaths on Perth beaches are not linked to disease or parasites and occurred naturally, the Department of Fisheries says.

Similar starfish deaths in previous years have been attributed to life cycle events, and larger than normal swells prior to the starfish dying in early August may have contributed.

Hundreds of dead starfish were found at South Beach, North Coogee, North Fremantle and Dalkeith, after an initial report suggested it could be up to 1000.

The department advises people not to swim in, fish or allow pets and other animals to come in contact with areas of water with large numbers of dead and decomposing fish.
