Maxwell could be Marsh replacement: Dizzy

Jason Gillespie has forecast some tough calls being made on Australia's Test XI if they fail to step up in Hobart.

The second chapter of Australia's three-match series against South Africa starts on Saturday, with the hosts under the pump to snap a four-Test losing streak.

National selectors are yet to settle on an XI for the clash. Allrounder Mitch Marsh could make way for Callum Ferguson if predicted heavy rain hits on Saturday morning.

But Marsh won't be the only member of the incumbent squad at risk of being dropped if the Proteas take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series at Bellerive.

"If individuals don't perform in Hobart, I would be very tempted to make some tough calls and change things up," Gillespie wrote in his cricket.com.au column.

"I think they will persevere with Mitchell Marsh at six for another Test, and I would probably lean that same way.

"But the fourth seamer has got to be worth his place in the side, and we're not getting the return on investment made in Mitch Marsh."

Gillespie is one of the leading contenders to coach Australia's Twenty20 side in February, when Darren Lehmann and the Test squad will be in India for a four-Test series.

The former Test paceman has also thrown his hat in the ring to become a selector when Rod Marsh steps down from his post next year.

Gillespie suggested offspinning allrounder Glenn Mawell, who is yet to play a Test on home soil, would be a fine choice to replace Marsh if selectors opt for change.

"I'm a big fan of Glenn Maxwell," he wrote.

"He's one of the most technically proficient batsmen in the country. He brings a lot in the field, gives you options with the ball.

"He's not even in this squad, but he would be in my top six.

"Unfortunately with young Mitch, he just hasn't quite done the business so he would be the one to make way.

"But these selectors love the fourth seam-bowling option, and I'm not against that when conditions suit."
