McMullen's Big Music gamble pays off

Darren McMullen had a good feeling about the Seven Network's The Big Music Quiz, which has been drawing in about a million viewers a week since it's aired.

McMullen, who stepped away from hosting when he left The Voice to pursue his acting career, clearly has good instincts.

"Leaving The Voice was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make in my whole life but I thought it was time to move on and do something else, challenge myself," McMullen said.

"But when Channel Seven pitched the show to me I was totally sold, I couldn't say no. It felt like the right move."

Not only has it been the right move, he was reminded pretty quickly what a good time he has in TV land.

"I was blown away by how much fun I had," he said.

"I fell in love with hosting again. It was back to being able to run around and go crazy and silly, and to be spontaneous and it was really good. So now I'm torn because I don't think I'm ready to give up hosting yet."

The show is enjoyed because it's something the whole family can watch together and McMullen also thinks it's appealing how the Aussie celebrities are chosen by team captains to join competing groups.

"There's sweet karma with that," the host said.

"A lot of people who were picked last were the sports people who were probably picked first all through school. But now the geeky kids who stayed home and listened to music or were DJs they're getting picked first, so it all comes around in the end."

It hasn't been that difficult to drum up some pretty big celebrity names to go on the show, including Hollywood actress Rebel Wilson.

"It was great to see Rebel Wilson come in and do the show," he said.

"Obviously her career is going from strength to strength. She certainly didn't need to come back and do that, so it was nice to have her there. And if we do season two I hope that opens up the doors for more big Aussies working overseas to come and have a shot at it as well."

McMullen now finds himself with another TV hit on his hands.

Does that mean he's going to give up on his acting dream?

"I think I can do the two," he said.
