Mel Gibson left a Channel 7 reporter high and dry on the red carpet yesterday, trashing her interview attempt with a rather blunt question of his own.

Sunrise's Edwina Bartholomew was quick to try and snatch a chat with the actor, whose AACTAs sweep seems a sure sign his Hollywood exile may be over.

But while Bartholomew might have expected a standard impersonal chat with the actor when she grabbed his hand, she probably didn't expect chit-chat quite so forthright.

"Edwina, pleasure to see you," Bartholomew said.

"Who are you?" Gibson replied.

"I'm good," Bartholomew replied. "I'm very, very well, more to the point, how are you? You're the man of the evening."

"Oh I'm good," Gibson said, perfectly affably. "I mean, are you?"

"I'm Edwina, lovely to meet you," the reporter said, doing a reasonable job of tamping down her embarrassment.

Naturally the exchange did not go unnoticed on the scorn-machine that is Twitter, with one wag tweeting that "Mel Gibson just summed up what all of Australia is thinking…who the hell is Edwina Bartholomew? Even she had trouble explaining it."

Which is a little unkind – and also not completely true. Earlier this year Bartholomew found herself the butt of many a digital quip thanks to the gown she wore to the Oscars, which some deemed eerily reminiscent of a certain part of the female anatomy.
