Woolworths has strengthened security after a burglar pinched a uniform in order to steal a car and other staff possessions from Melbourne supermarkets.

The uniform was stolen with handbags and wallets from a staffroom at Woolworths' Frankston store last Wednesday before the thief wore it the next morning to gain access to the Hastings store, police say.

Inside the staffroom, the man pocketed phones, more wallets and car keys, which he used to drive an employee's car to the Mornington store where more items were pilfered from the staff room.

Calling the act "brazen", a Woolworths spokesman said security had been upgraded.

"We have enhanced our security protocols in local stores to ensure the protection of our team members and customers," he told AAP in a statement on Tuesday.
