Revellers are staking out the best vantage points as Melbourne gets ready to welcome 2017 with its biggest ever pyrotechnics extravaganza.

Partygoers have begun flocking into the CBD under sunny blue skies, filling Federation Square and lining the Yarra River to see fireworks fired from an unprecedented 22 city rooftops.

Families are settling into Yarra Park for an early fireworks show, while others are gathering at live sites at the Docklands, Flagstaff Gardens, Kings Domain and Treasury Gardens for free entertainment and top views for when the skyline erupts in a glittering show at midnight.

Emma Eastick, of Pakenham, ventured into the CBD for New Year's Eve for the first time, with her parents visiting from the UK, her husband and two children.

"It's just to see the big fantastic fireworks live, rather than on the TV," she said.
