Three young men have been rescued from a Melbourne shipwreck after it tore a hole in their inflatable dinghy when the trio got too close.

The men - an 18-year-old and two others aged 20 - got into trouble after rowing their small blow-up boat to the HMVS Cerberus shipwreck off Black Rock to watch Sunday's sunset.

After the hull was punctured the trio climbed onto the shipwreck and called out to a fisherman on the nearby pier who raised the alarm after 10.30pm.

Water Police subsequently rescued the men and will issue each with a $311 fine for failing to wear a life jacket.
