A Melbourne waterfront hotel is on fire with thick smoke billowing across Etihad Stadium.

More than 50 firefighters are at the Woolshed Pub in Docklands, fighting a blaze that started about 3pm on Friday.

Two people had to be treated for minor smoke inhalation after patrons were evacuated from the building, an MFB spokesman told AAP.

Crews are trying to stop the fire spreading, with flames reaching the building's roof.

Smoke has travelled to nearby Etihad Stadium while the MFB has advised people to avoid the area.

Videos posted on social media show crowds gathering to look at large plumes of smoke coming from the pub.

A fire boat is also stationed alongside the waterside pub to help crews if the blaze spreads.

Firefighters have found asbestos in the roof, while a cause for the fire has not yet been determined.
