Mischievous orangutan Menyaru, who's great escape sent Melbourne Zoo into lockdown last year, has celebrated his 13th birthday with a feast of fruity cupcakes and chocolate and nut filled gifts.

The cheeky orangutan happily accepted his birthday offerings and posed for the cameras before grabbing a banana and promptly turning his back to devour his celebratory feast.

Zoo director Kevin Tanner says Menyaru continues to keep staff on their toes.

"If you are not paying enough attention, and if his water is on, he might grab a mouthful of water and spit on you," Mr Tanner told AAP.

"You have to be very careful about what you give him because of the creative things he can get up to."

Menyaru's birthday celebrations also coincided with World Tiger Day, to highlight the need for mandatory labelling of all products containing palm oil.
