Misbah, Pakistan contemplate the future

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq has plenty on his mind as he sorts through the wreckage of their Boxing Day Test loss.

Misbah is contemplating retirement after his team gave up the momentum they built with their fighting loss in the first Test and then a solid first innings at the MCG.

After Australia took full toll of the tourists' lacklustre fielding and bowling, they blasted them out on the last day for a miracle win by an innings and 18 runs.

Once again, Pakistan sealed their reputation as the most mercurial team in Test cricket.

Misbah also is unsure about his future and would not commit to playing in next week's third Test at the SCG.

"In the next couple of days I'll just think about that and decide what to do because there is no point just hanging around doing nothing," he lamented.

Misbah's dreadful form this summer, scoring just 20 runs in four innings, culminated in a second-ball duck on day five at the MCG.

"Maybe the thought process as a batsman is not right," he said of his form.

"That is what has happened with me.

"Quite a few innings now in which the shot that isn't on, or the wrong shot for the wrong time...I don't know, as a cricketer, as a batsman it is hard.

"Especially when your confidence, when you are not scoring regularly, when you go inside, making the right decisions become a but more difficult.

"Maybe that is happening now."

Misbah said Pakistan failed to put the pressure on Australia after the tourists posted a solid first innings of 9 (dec)-443.

Then they wilted under Australia's pressure, as the home side set an MCG Test innings record with 8 (dec)-624.

Only one side came to the MCG on Friday thinking they could win and Pakistan wilted horribly in their second innings to be dismissed for 163.

After Brisbane's honourable loss, they will need a dramatic form turnaround in Sydney to avoid a series sweep.
