The boat of a missing crab fisherman has been found near Dixon Island off WA's Pilbara coast, about 20 kilometres from where he set off.

Another fisherman found the boat mostly submerged, with the bow showing out of the water floating on the west side of the island .

The search enters its second day for 52-year-old Norman Leslie Bale.

He set off alone in a dinghy from Back Beach boat ramp, 5km east of Karratha, about 5pm on Friday.

Police say witnesses suggest he might have had trouble with his boat engine before setting off.

He has had no contact with family or friends since then and was reported missing by a workmate at 7.30pm on Sunday.

The search was stepped up on Tuesday, involving multiple vessels, quad bikes and aircraft but focusing on a smaller area.

Rescuers say the likelihood of finding Mr Bale alive is dwindling.
