Afghan security forces have made many gains but there is still much more to be done, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has told parliament.

Australia had agreed to extend $80 million a year in aid for another two years at the donor conference in Brussels last week.

"Our aid program in particular is focusing on specific areas including ensuring that women can escape violence and can access justice. We're also focusing on girls in school, giving girls the opportunity to have an education," Ms Bishop told MPs on Monday.
