A motorcyclist has died in a collision with a car west of Brisbane, which has also left his passenger in a critical condition.

The 57-year-old rider died at the scene, at the intersection of the Warrego Highway and Shaw Road at Hatton Vale, about 10am on Friday.

His pillion passenger, a 49-year-old woman, was airlifted to hospital with significant injuries, while the 18-year-old female driver of the car and a 13-year-old female passenger were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said the man's death takes the state's road toll to 239, four more than at the same time last year.

"This is the 60th fatality for the year involving a motorcyclist and there's a very strong message there," Mr Keating said.

"It's about everybody taking care, everybody on the road making good decisions and being accountable for those decisions in the long term."

Speaking more generally he said police were seeing a trend with older male motorcyclists being over-represented in fatality figures

"Not all at fault, that's for sure, but in some cases they could have made better decisions."
