Mountain of Mehajer texts awaits: court

Authorities pursuing embattled property developer Salim Mehajer and his sister Fatima over alleged electoral fraud are sifting through 19,000 text messages as they prepare to take the matter to a hearing, a Sydney court has heard.

The Mehajer siblings are fighting allegations they used dozens of forged voter forms in the lead-up to 2012 local council elections, in which both were candidates.

"There were originally 61,000 text messages that were received from Mr Mehajer's phone," commonwealth prosecutor Liam Cavell told the Downing Centre Local Court on Tuesday.

"The AFP (Australian Federal Police) have reduced that down to close to 19,000."

But he said investigators still need to work their way through that smaller batch of text messages "and do something meaningful with them".

The case is expected to return to court on November 28.
