MP expenses changes get rid of grey areas

A crackdown on federal politicians' entitlements will likely mean taxpayers fork out less to cover expenses over time, a senior government MP says.

Cabinet minister Arthur Sinodinos says any changes will get rid of the grey areas over what expenses can be claimed from the public purse, bringing the system more into line with what people would expect they could claim from their own workplace.

"The big problem is that in the past I think there's been too much discretion as to how to interpret the rules and I think we need to move to a system which is a bit more black and white," he told reporters in Sydney on Sunday.
