A mystery caller who phoned police 24 years ago about a Brisbane man who went missing in the mid-1980s could hold the key to the murder.

The remains of Wayne James Youngkin were found in a disused septic tank on a property at Brighton in November.

Police say the last known whereabouts of Mr Youngkin was when he applied for a passport in 1986 while he lived at the Brighton property in north Brisbane.

Investigators hope a male caller who rang Sandgate Police Station in August 1992 can assist them with the murder investigation.

Mr Youngkin was aged 29 or 30 when he went missing and was living with his grandmother and uncle at the time he disappeared.

Police have appealed for anyone with information about Mr Youngkin to contact them.
