The first of the RAAF's 15 new maritime surveillance aircraft is set to arrive at the Edinburgh air base in Adelaide.

The P-8A Poseidons will replace the AP3C Orions which have patrolled Australia's coast for many years.

A ceremony to mark the first plane's arrival will be held on Friday with South Australian Defence Industries Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith saying it cements the state's place at the centre of the nation's military intelligence, surveillance, and electronic warfare capabilities.

Based on the Boeing 737, the Poseidon flies faster, higher and further than the aircraft it replaces and incorporates the latest maritime surveillance and attack capabilities.
