Nick Cave appears to address the death of his 15-year-old son head-on in the first track released from his upcoming 16th album with the Bad Seeds, Skeleton Tree.

The track, Jesus Alone, has been revealed in a video, giving a glimpse into the upcoming black-and-white 3D film One More Time With Feeling, which will showcase the new album.

Cave wrote the music following the death of his 15-year-old son Arthur who fell from a cliff last July in Brighton, England, where the family lives.

From the first line, Cave appears to address his son's death.

"You fell from the sky, crash landed in a field near the River Adur," Cave sings.

In the black-and-white video, Cave sings from behind a piano putting particular emphasis on the chorus line: "With my voice I am calling you."

The director of the film, Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly), said Cave instigated its creation.

"My immediate response was, `Why do you want to do this'? Nick told me that he had some things he needed to say, but he didn't know who to say them to," Dominik said.

"The idea of a traditional interview, he said, was simply unfeasible but that he felt a need to let the people who cared about his music understand the basic state of things. It seemed to me that he was trapped somewhere and just needed to do something ... anything - to at least give the impression of forward movement."

* One More Time With Feeling will screen globally on September 8 and Skeleton Tree will be released September 9.
