Nicole Kidman will be back home to walk the red carpet for the Australian premiere of the upcoming film Lion.

The Australian actress will be joined by the film's star Dev Patel, who plays Kidman's adopted son in the movie which was partially shot in Tasmania.

The pair will walk the red carpet at Sydney's State Theatre on December 19.

It's perfect timing as Kidman's husband Keith Urban will have just wrapped up the Australian leg of his Ripcord tour in Brisbane two nights before.

The movie, based on the true story of Saroo Brierley's search for his birth family in India as documented in his book A Long Way Home, is already generating awards buzz. Patel has been nominated for Best Actor at the upcoming Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) and Kidman has been tipped as an early Oscar contender by Variety.

The showbiz publication also tipped Lion to be included in the 10 best picture nominees at the Oscars and Patel as a potential Best Actor nominee. The film also stars Rooney Mara and David Wenham.

Lion will be released in Australian cinemas on January 19.
