Channel Nine cricket commentator Mark Nicholas is resting in hospital after a health scare during the opening day of the Boxing Day Test.

Nicholas needed medical attention after complaining of stomach pain at the MCG and was taken to nearby Epworth Hospital by ambulance.

"Mark is doing much better this evening and is in good spirits," a Nine spokesperson said.

"He wants to thank the MCG staff for all of their help, and the Channel Nine viewers and cricket community for their good wishes."

Paramedics went to the Nine commentary box to help Nicholas, who was not on air at the time.

He was said to be sweating profusely and struggling when he received medical attention.

Veteran ABC radio commentator Jim Maxwell is recovering after suffering a stroke in August.

Earlier this month he did some commentary at the SCG for Australia's one-dayer against New Zealand.
