Licensed recreational abalone fishers in Western Australia are being reminded that the practice will not be allowed on New Year's Day because of safety concerns.

The next West Coast Zone fishing date has been shifted to January 8 between 7am and 8am, and authorities will patrol abalone fishing locations this weekend to ensure compliance.

Department of Fisheries director for strategic fisheries policy Nathan Harrison said the change of date was made amid concerns for people's safety directly following New Year's Eve celebrations.

"We don't want a situation where people who have been celebrating the new year then try their hand at abalone fishing first thing in the morning," he said.

"This could potentially put fishers and Surf Life Saving volunteers at risk."

Mr Harrison said the department would directly contact licensed recreational fishers who provided an email address or phone number.

Illegal fishing can attract penalties as high as $10,000 plus up to 10 times the dollar value of the species caught.
