No plan to suspend law for plebiscite

It was never envisaged anti-discrimination laws would be suspended for a same-sex marriage plebiscite, Human Rights Commission president Gillian Triggs has told a Senate hearing.

Professor Triggs said any debate should be respectful, measured and based on evidence.

Suspending the law in any way to allow statements that would be illegal was a rather extreme suggestion," she told a Senate estimates committee on Tuesday.
