A north Queensland man has been struck down with the potentially deadly meningococcal disease.

The 45-year-old from the Whitsundays is being treated at the Townsville Hospital for the illness, which is caused by a bacterial infection of the blood or membranes that line the spinal cord and brain.

The man has had limited close contact with others and the risk to the community was very low, Townsville Public Health Unit director Dr Steven Donohue said.
