One of Australia's first not-for-profit funeral services has opened in NSW, backed by more than $700,000 in start-up funding.

Tender Funerals, a long-running initiative of the Port Kembla Community Project, is based in one of Wollongong's former fire stations and offers low-cost services including funerals, home-based ceremonies, cremation, burials and palliative care workshops.

The organisation's morgue, van and full-time funeral director have been financed by crowdfunding, state government funds, grants and loans.
