A two-year-old girl has died in hospital from injuries she allegedly suffered from her mother's new partner at their western Sydney home earlier this week.

A 22-year-old man, Mohammed Khazma, was charged with reckless assault causing grievous bodily harm after the alleged attack and his charges are expected to be upgraded to murder when he appears in court in January, police said on Wednesday.

The mother, also 22, discovered her daughter on Monday afternoon at a home on Marian St in Guildford West and then drove with the child to a relative's home on nearby McCredie Rd.

Emergency services were called and paramedics commenced CPR on the child who had gone into cardiac arrest.

The girl was taken to Westmead Children's Hospital in a critical condition but died on Tuesday night, police said.

Police allege Khazma physically assaulted the girl on Monday afternoon in a granny flat, in which the trio lived.

NSW Police said the mother and Khazma had only been together for a short time.

On Tuesday Acting Superintendent Glen Parks described the assault on the girl as "shocking".

"It is a human instinct to care for the young and the vulnerable and when instances like this occur it is often very difficult to comprehend," he said. "Any incident like this is very difficult."

Khazma was refused bail at Parramatta local court on Tuesday and is next due to face court on January 10.
