A NSW man will face court after he allegedly splashed fuel at a woman in an argument over a quad bike on the south coast, leaving her with serious burns.

Police say the 39-year-old arrived at a Lake Tabourie home on Thursday evening to confront a woman and her teenage son about a quad bike he claimed had been stolen.

An argument broke out and petrol was allegedly thrown at a car on the property, some of which landed on the woman.

She sustained serious burns to her upper torso and head when attempts were made to set the car on fire, police said.

The woman was airlifted to a Sydney hospital and remains in a serious condition.

The man was treated for burns to his arms before being released to be charged with recklessly causing grievous bodily harm.

He was refused bail and is due to appear at Nowra Local Court on Friday.
